So I just tried removing my top 256, and leaving the lower 256 in place. So then I read this last link about the total 512mbs of ram causing problems with panther. Ok so I tried cleaning the Ram contacts with a white eraser.no luck! Exactly the same.disappointing. I got frustrated and busy and put this computer off for a while. Only problem is that I dont have access to anyone elses Mac to disassemble and put my HD in for OS install. Then it should probably be ok? When i put my 4GB HD in there it seems to work fine. I would like to put my HD in somebody elses Mac to just get the install done. If i allow it to "check disc" than it will likely only get around 70% through install. My only guess at this point is that maybe the CD Rom is dieing? After installing about 90%, it just gets tired and starts making errors? And it seems to get further through install if i skip "checking disc". Then over time, i was getting more and more crashes. I originally upgraded my HD from the 4GB to the 60GB 6months ago and the install was no problem. I tried a brand new copy of the install disc thinking mine might be damaged, same thing. It always crashes near the end of disc 1. So i returned my 60GB Seagate, and it was replaced with an 80GB seagate for $10 more. I tried my original 4gb HD and the system runs just fine without crashing. Finally i figured the HD must be defective (accounting for my previous crashes with the OS installed). Sometimes it just freezes, other times the screen changes to all these pscychodelic colours, slowly changing! I formatted the HD several different ways, including using Norton Utilities to write zeros to all sectors, formatting on a PC, anything i could think of. I tried over and over, and it always crashes near the end of disc 1 but always at a different point. About 90% through basesystem part2, the computer froze. Nothing fully fixed it so I finally decided to reformat the HD and do a fresh clean install.Īfter formatting, I tried to install from my panther disc 1 by booting from CD (holding 'C'). I was previously having frequent problems with my computer freezing.
